History of Bee Cave   img
(information and photos courtsey of Village of Bee Cave)

The rich history of Bee Cave paints a picture of progress and comradery, blending traditional beginnings with new opportunities.

In hopes of finding a place to raise his family away from the confines of the city and its influence, Dietrich Bohls migrated from Germany to an unsettled area in the Republic of Texas in 1856 – an area know today as the Village at Bee Cave. The Bohls family was one of the first families to settle in Bee Cave, where some of the original structures of the time still exist.

In 1870 Carl Beck opened a general store, gristmill, cotton gin and cigar factory. The community applied for a post office and Beck, the Postmaster, named it Bee Cave after the numerous honeybee colonies that nested in the eves of local buildings.

The last one-room school building, constructed in 1926, was used in the 1970s as a community center and has currently been restored by the Western Hill Country Historical Society.

The building gained a bell tower in 1948, and underwent a complete remodel from 1979-1980. A steeple was added and native rock was used for the exterior.

Facing annexation from the city of Austin, the Bee Cave area overcame several obstacles and eventually the Village of Bee Cave became incorporated in 1987, encompassing 8,800 acres of extraterritorial jurisdiction.

Throughout its history, most of the milestones that the Village of Bee Cave has experienced have been marked by buildings that embody the people and priorities of the Bee Cave community. The Preserve at Bee Cave is proud to be a member of this progressive community, founded on traditions and reaching towards new opportunities.
